Why are there numbers next to certain teams on the MLB standings chart?

What do they mean? Why are there numbers next to certain teams on the MLB standings chart?
the most recent one in the teens is magic number to win the division.

the other little number is wild card games back from the leader. Why are there numbers next to certain teams on the MLB standings chart?
Well...you have the team name followed by wins, losses, winning percentage, games behind in their divisional race, games behind in the wild card race, W-L record for the last 10 games, current streak (consecutive games won or lost), home record, road record, and with the playoff races winding down you now have the team's magic number in parentheses next to their name.

Which one were you unsure of?
There are many numbers on an MLB Standings chart. I will explain briefly each of these using the example below.

Toronto 72 66 .522 16.5 8 3-7 L1

First, you can see the team's name, in this case Toronto.

Next is the team's win loss record. In this case it is 72-66, or seventy two wins and sixty two losses.

Thirdly is a decimal number that can be changed into a percentage. For this example it is .522, or 52.2%. This is the team's winning percentage or win rate.

Next is a stat called games back. All this means is how many games it would take for that team to win (and the division leading team to lose) in order for the team to take over 1st in the division. In this case, Toronto needs to win 17 games and whoever is leading the division has to lose the same number of games.

Fifth is the 'elimination number'. This is a number that is how many games the team needs to lose in order to be written out of the playoffs and not be able to make it. If this number is actually a letter E, then the team has been eliminated. Toronto needs to lose 8 games to not have a chance at making the playoffs.

Sixth is the team's 'last 10'. This is their record in their last 10 games.

Finally is the team's 'streak'. Toronto has a streak of L1, or Lost 1. Their most recent game was lost.

Hope this helped!
